India Takes On Britain On The Polo Field Today: Jaipur Trophy Returns To London

India and Britain faced off on the polo field in London on July 18, as the Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park hosted matches marking Indian Polo Day, including the revived Jaipur Trophy contest.

The day opened with the final of the Indian Polo Challenge Shield, a match between Indian and British teams, before the main Jaipur Trophy fixture between the Jaipur Polo Team and the Guards Polo Club team later in the evening.

The Jaipur Polo Team lined up Padmanabh Singh, Will Emerson, Simran Singh Shergill and Naveen Jindal, up against a Guards Polo Club side of Sardar Jaisal Singh, Abhimanyu Pathak, Kuldeep Singh Rathore and Juan Gris Zavaleta. The match started at 7.30pm IST and was broadcast live on Guards TV.

Padmanabh Singh handed the Indian Polo Challenge Shield to the winning team, continuing his role as the current custodian of a family tradition that stretches back more than five decades.

The Jaipur Trophy was first given to the Guards Polo Club in 1968 by Man Singh II, regarded as one of the finest polo players of his era. Following his death in 1970, his wife Gayatri Devi kept the trophy’s tradition going for close to 40 years by attending matches regularly.

After last being contested in 2011, the trophy sat out for 11 years until Padmanabh Singh revived it in 2025, restoring a fixture that has long served as a marker of the historic sporting relationship between India and Britain.
