Goa and Sikkim made India’s richest-district list, and they’re not the ones you’d expect

Tourism remains the backbone of Goa’s economy, helping both North Goa and South Goa secure a place among India’s wealthiest regions in 2026. For travellers, Goa needs no introduction: golden beaches, Portuguese architecture and colourful nightlife have made it one of India’s most visited destinations.

Further north and at a very different altitude, the Sikkim district cluster — Gangtok, Namchi, Mangan, and Gyalshing together — also ranks among India’s richest regions. For travellers, Sikkim offers Himalayan scenery, Buddhist monasteries, and some of the country’s cleanest towns.

Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, centred around Mangaluru, makes the list too, benefiting from a strong port economy and educational institutes. Travellers are drawn to its coastline, temples and seafood cuisine, and it also serves as a gateway to destinations such as Udupi and Coorg.

These tourism and trade-driven districts sit on the same 2026 list as tech and corporate hubs like Rangareddy (Hyderabad), Gurugram and Bengaluru, which continue to top the rankings by GDP per capita. The list is based on 2026 district-level economic indicators, according to an analysis by Inframantra.
