How to opt out of Meta’s Muse Image feature in under a minute

Meta’s newly launched Muse Image tool lets anyone tag a public Instagram account and generate AI images built from that person’s published photos and reels — without permission or notification. The fix to opt out, however, is quick once you know where to look.

Open Instagram, tap your profile, then the hamburger menu in the top-right corner, and scroll to “Sharing and reuse.” Under “Allow people to create with and reuse your content,” switch off both Posts and Reels, and turn off the audio reuse option below it too. For a more complete lockdown, flipping an account to private stops the feature from working on it entirely.

One catch is worth knowing: anything already generated before opting out stays live. Turning the setting off stops new images from being created, not the ones already made.

Muse Image, which launched Tuesday out of Meta Superintelligence Labs, sits at No. 2 on the Arena leaderboard for text-to-image capability. A Meta spokesperson said the tool blocks violent, sexual or defamatory imagery of real people, that content breaking Community Standards gets enforced, and that underage public accounts are walled off from the feature, with teens unable to use it on others.
