Why Do America’s Tech Billionaires Keep Buying Yachts From Europe?

A Seattle shipyard has launched a new line of hybrid superyachts in an attempt to win back the business of American billionaires who have long turned to European builders for their vessels.

It is a pattern that has held for decades: when America’s wealthiest want a serious yacht, they go to Europe. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos commissioned his 127-meter Koru from Dutch builder Oceanco. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs picked Dutch yard Feadship for Venus. Oracle’s Larry Ellison has owned vessels from both Lurssen and Feadship, and Barry Diller’s Eos and Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s Dragonfly came from Germany’s Lurssen. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been linked to a Feadship project called Launchpad. The roll call reads like a list of the world’s most valuable companies, and every one of those yachts was built an ocean away from home.

One American shipyard thinks it knows how to change that. Seattle-based Delta Marine has partnered with London design studio Bannenberg & Rowell to unveil a new family of hybrid superyachts ranging from 50 to 75 meters, according to a report by Luxury Launches. The first vessel, the Delta 50BR, is a 164-foot yacht built to blend European styling with American engineering.

Delta Marine’s answer starts with outdoor living space. The Delta 50BR has a terraced stern pool, tiered lounging areas, room for alfresco dining, and full-height garages hidden beneath the staircases for surfboards and paddleboards, plus an owner’s deck with separate offices and a winter garden for guests who want to work while cruising from Alaska to Scandinavia. Its diesel-electric hybrid system, built with podded drivers and integrated energy storage, is designed for quieter running, lower emissions and smoother cruising, and the yacht sleeps 12 guests across six staterooms, including a full-beam VIP suite and accessible cabins on the main deck.

There is also a legal answer to the question of why building at home matters. US coastwise passenger laws restrict foreign-built yachts from certain charter operations between American ports, while American-built vessels can move more freely in regions like Florida, New England and Alaska, giving Delta Marine’s yachts an operational advantage European-built boats simply do not have in US waters.

Founded in 1967 as a builder of rugged Pacific Northwest fishing boats, Delta Marine is now staking a claim in a market Europe has dominated for generations. Whether that is enough to draw the next Bezos or Brin away from Oceanco or Lurssen remains to be seen, but the shipyard has made its case.
